About this place

Osezaki Lighthouse crowns sea cliffs at Tamano-ura, Goto City, the westernmost point of Fukue Island, chosen as one of Japan's 50 Lighthouses and 100 Best Sunsets. First lit in 1879, it boasts one of Japan's strongest lights guiding East China Sea traffic and remains operational. From parking to lighthouse requires a 1.2km 20-minute downhill plus 40-minute uphill return hike, with two pre-observation decks giving alternative angles over cliffs and beacon. No vending or toilets, so sturdy hiking shoes and drinks essential. The sunset here is the last visible on Kyushu mainland, attracting sunset viewing parties on Dec 31. The surrounding plateau is a historic wartime lookout; the former Imperial Navy Watchtower first received the famous 'Enemy fleet sighted' wireless during Russo-Japanese War. Endangered Shimashajin violet colonies bloom September-October on the rocky slope, and migratory honey buzzards cross the strait, enriching natural observation.
