Tenkaiho at 165 meters in Sasebo is the premier viewpoint for the southern Kujukushima, one of Saikai National Park's 208-island drowned archipelago and a candidate for Japan's 100 Landscapes. As one of the Kujukushima Hakkei eight scenic spots, it commands a 180-degree panorama of islets like a natural artwork scattered on emerald sea. Below the observatory lies a one-hectare field where 150,000 rapeseed blossoms create a yellow carpet each spring, timed with cherry blossom pink for a dual-color festival. Local welfare volunteers have maintained the flowers for over 15 years, with peak until early April. Kujukushima is best explored from Pearl Sea Resort where Pearl Queen cruise boats and kayaks operate, and the area is famous for oyster farming designated every September 19 as Kujukushima Day. The observatory is free, with nearby restaurants and cafes, and pairs well with Ishidake and Yumihari viewpoints to chase the sunset over the island sea.
